The Institute

A center for world reference in research, diagnostics and treatment, the Instituto do Sono (Sleep Institute), part of AFIP, Associação Fundo de Incentivo à Pesquisa (Association for the Incentive and Funding of Research), is a pioneer in Brazil. Since its inception, in 1992, it performs multidisciplinary research, as well as identifies and treats sleep disorders that afflict the population.

The history of sleep research at AFIP, however, began in the 1970s, with the publication of professor and chairman of the institution Sergio Tufik’s PhD thesis. Research advanced, the staff grew, and today the Instituto do Sono has one of the largest and most diversified research groups in the world.
